NURSING UNIFORMS
what's chic in hospital
The origin of nursing uniforms is uncertain. One proposal considers the convents as the source.
Nuns were the original nurses. As a result, their somber black and white outfits inspired the plain clothing worn by successive caregivers.
Nurse uniforms over the years have changed dramatically – the uniform
originally was modeled on the nun’s habit and some of you may even remember starching your uniform and donning the obligatory cape!
Another suggestion looks, instead, to Florence Nightingale. She dictated the outfits for her nurses serving in the Crimean War. They wore gray tweed dresses featuring long sleeves and ample skirts. These early nurses also wore a brown scarf, while, on their head perched a white cap. Dress, similar to that of middle class housewives, ensured they were not mistaken for cooks, laundresses and camp followers.
Nursing uniforms have been changing since then...
and where all the caps have gone ?
Nowadays though, the modern nursing scrubs are much more comfortable and certainly easier to maintain with many opting for a nurse’s tunic and trouser combination.
These days some hospitals still opt for traditional “whites” but others are selecting from a wide range of options that include exotic colours like “Caribbean Blue” or “Flamingo Pink”.
Styles range from cheap nurse uniforms, for those on lower budgets, to high end fashionable nurse uniforms from well-known designers such as Kathy Peterson and Marc Ecko . The most commonly used fabric for nurse uniforms is cotton. Cotton is popular as a natural source of material mainly due to its suitability for different climatic conditions as it allows the garment to breath. It is also more durable and importantly offers a higher comfort level for those working long shifts. There are certain other materials too being used in the fabrication of scrubs, for example polyester which is predominantly found in the budget unisex scrub ranges however does offer a much lower level of comfort.
There are several reasons for wearing uniforms in the healthcare sector. Medical uniforms create a more formal and professional look in hospitals. Nursing staff with neat appearances create a good impression for the patients and visitors and the wearing of a medical uniform helps identify different roles and members of the team. As medical professionals are handling patients with a variety of diseases and infections a uniform also helps protect nurses whilst at work and helps restrict the spread of diseases.
In the UK and Ireland in the past many medical uniforms were traditionally purchased from retail outlets or through mail order, however as internet shopping has progressed and become part of everyday life, uniform suppliers have moved their retail stores “online”.

LOOK GREAT IN YOUR UNIFORM – TIPS:
Who made the rule that says it’s impossible to look good when you’re wearing scrubs? You spend the majority of their day in our nursing uniforms, so why not look our best?
These 5 tips can easily and
inexpensively make nurses look great in their gear every day:
- Make sure you purchase the right size.
This may seem like a given but most women aren’t aware of their actual
measurements. Pay attention to your body’s shape and know your
measurements. This will make purchasing the correct size simple and reading a size chart
effortless!
When buying nursing scrubs, wearing the correct size is essential; always
make sure your scrubs are not too tight or too loose. Scrubs that are too small
often can look unflattering and can be uncomfortable to work in. Scrubs that
are too large can project a sloppy appearance.
- Chose right colour
If you can wear fun bright colors, take advantage of it! Scrubs come in many bright, fun and bold colors, while still maintaining the
professional appearance of nurses. Celebrate your freedom to wear color and try
to choose a shade that compliments your skin tone.
- Add accessories
A simple pair of earrings, a great hair piece, or a beautiful necklace can
go a long way with scrubs. Enjoy the freedom to doll up and have fun with your
nursing scrubs. Celebrate your style!
- Personalize your scrubs.
Nothing is better than standing out. A personal touch on a pair of scrubs
can make a huge difference. A small detail can add that special something,
making your nursing uniform unique. Never
underestimate individuality; it is the essence of style.
- Be confident.
When you look good you feel great! Make sure you purchase scrubs you love
that reflect your individual style. Take each purchase as seriously as you
would any other outfit in your wardrobe. When you feel good on the inside, you
are sure to glow on the outside. Your clothes and your nursing uniform are an
outward reflection of you—make sure you put your best look forward.
Looking great will help you
feel good about yourself. Being a nurse does not mean you have to compromise
your fashion sense when wearing your uniform.
